LSU advances; will host Super Regional

Thanks to the lights out pitching effort by Lewis Coleman and a great offensive performance by most of the lineup, the Tigers trounced Minnesota, 10-3. The Tigers went up early, leading to a rather uneventful game until the 6th when Mitchell missed a catch and took a roll over the ball. The umps decided he caught it (though replay clearly shows it hit the ground) and that led to the Gopher's head coach Tyler Oakes and his son, pitcher Todd Oakes being ejected for arguing the call.

LSU's opponent has not been determined, as Rice and Kansas St will play again tonight at 7. You may be able to watch that game online for free at CBS's website, I'll update this post with a link when I find it.

Baton Rouge Regional Day 3 Report: Minnesota and LSU Square Off for Spot in College Baseball Sweet 16

It was 1997 all over again on Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.  Minnesota eliminated Baylor with a football esque score of 15-12.  Baylor led early 5-2 and held the lead until Minnesota would score three in the 7th, five in the 8th, and five more in the 9th.

I dozed off for a few minutes at that point and woke up to a score of 15-11 with Baylor batting in the bottom of the 9th with nobody out and one runner on.  Baylor would plate one more run, but the comeback would end there.

The Golden Gophers and the Tigers face off at 6:00pm later this evening, with Minnesota having to beat LSU twice to advance to the Super Regional round.  An "if necessary" game is scheduled for Monday at 1:00pm.  Considering most of us have to work tomorrow, here's to Louis Coleman sealing the deal for LSU tonight.

Baton Rouge Regional Day 2 Report: Minnesota Eliminates Southern 11-8

It's going to be two and a 'que for the Southern Jaguars' 2009 postseason as Southern falls to the Golden Gophers 11-8 Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium.

I did not get a chance to watch the game as my day job kept me busy all day today. But, my hat's off to Roger Cador and the Southern Jaguars. For a little over 6 innings on Friday, they had this Tiger fan biting his fingernails.

Minnesota will face the loser of the Baylor - LSU game at 1:00pm on Sunday. First pitch for tonight's winner's bracket game is approximately 6:00pm.

Sophomore righthander Shawn Tolleson (1-2, 4.50 ERA, 50.0 IP, 27 BB, 39 K) will start against the Tigers.  While I have not looked it up, I am assuming Anthony Ranaudo will start for LSU.

Baton Rouge Regional Day 1 Report: LSU Knocks off Southern with 7 Run 7th

For 6 plus innings, Southern left hander Chase Richard held the No. 3 national seed LSU Tigers in check.  But, after LSU tied the game in the 7th, Southern coach Roger Cador decided to pull Richard in favor of right hander Kyle Wahl.

The move did not pay off as LSU would score six more times in the 7th to take an 8-2 lead.  LSU would plate two more in the 8th and would go on to win game 1 of the Baton Rouge regional 10-2.

Austin Ross got the start for LSU and promptly gave up a lead off single and a two run homerun to Victor Franklin.  Ross would settle down and strke out the side in the 1st and would not allow another run until he was pulled for Paul Bertuccini in the 7th.

Richard kept LSU hitters off balance with a nice mixture of off spead breaking  balls and scattered 7 hits through 6 1/3 innings.  He would strike out none, but only walk one.

BR Regional Day 1-LSU v Southern-1pm-Cox, radio

SEC Champ v SWAC Champ with some home town bragging rights on the line as well. Thanks to some fine research on the teams, we know LSU should do very well due to the lack of quality LHP from all the opposition. I just hope we don't get complacent and then get caught playing down to the competition.

Both games today will be broadcast live on CST and radio. And for all stuck at work, the Geaux Zone is Free all weekend long for all games in the regional. LINK

Beautiful weather for baseball all weekend long, if a little warm.

Couldn't find much on pitching, but we know Ross is starting game one for us.
